NYC: UCB East closes and moves shows to Subculture

Share

Increasing costs of running a New York theatre space seem to have got the better of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade’s East Village theatre. UCB East (known to many as The Beast) opened in 2011 but will close on February 9th. Some shows will now be re-homed at East Village venue Subculture.

In a statement the UCB4 (Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh) said:

““Due to the long-term cost of rent, property taxes, and other expenses associated with operating a second venue in New York City, U.C.B. has created this new experience at SubCulture to reduce the financial impact.””

This comes after a number of UCB staff job losses. The company also recently announced that the Del Close Marathon, the improv festival that was a fixture of the New York calendar, was moving to LA and would no longer feature teams from other theatres or international teams.
